Sacred Pu'uhonua o' Honaunau, dated around 1550, was a safe haven to kapu (taboo) breakers, defeated warriors, deserters and refugees of all kinds island. Punishment for breaking many kapu was death. But if the kapu-breaker could somehow make his way to the pu'uhonua without being captured, he could be pardoned of his crime by the local kahuna. ($210)
