The West End - Molokai

Pristine Papohaku Beach

The Hawaiian sunset is almost always a spectacle, and you can't find a better perch for it than West End Moloka'i. The beaches along this shore are superb, particularly the vast white-sand expanse of Papohaku. Just inland from this three-mile-long beach is Papohaku Beach Park, with restroom facilities and barbecues. (Overnight camping is allowed by county permit.)

There are many other coves and beaches along this coast, most notably Kapukahehu (Dixie Maru) Beach near the road's end. This is a good area for exploring on foot along the coast. At night you can see the electric lights of O'ahu twinkling across the channel.

The West End is former ranch land. You are likely to spot wild axis deer, turkeys, and pheasants. On a hilltop sits the little hamlet called Maunaloa-former headquarters of now-defunct Molokai Ranch. The big attraction here now is the whimsical Big Wind Kite Factory with its marvelous trinkets and toys.
